On Feb 23rd, Hebei province’s Renze People’s Court uploaded 11 Yu-Gi-Oh! cards onto Alibaba’s juridical auction platform. The Blue-Eyes White Dragon 20th Anniversary Gold Edition card caught people’s attention with its 80 thousand CNY (~ 12.65 thousand USD) starting price. According to the court, this particular card, ID number 112, comes with an official Konami certificate and is in good condition. If you want to bid on this card, you have to pay a deposit of 16 thousand CNY (~2.5 thousand USD). So far, seven people have signed up and paid the deposit, while more than 13 thousand people have decided to ‘standby’ at the auction. The auction will be held on Mar 12th at Alibaba Auction.

Surprisingly, this is not the first time a rare Yu-Gi-Oh! card has gone onto juridical auction. In June 2021, a courthouse in Anhui seized a large pool of collectibles from an anti-bribery action. In that auction, the Blue-Eyes White Dragon 20th Anniversary Gold Edition card, ID number 152, had a starting price of 80 CNY (~12.63 USD) due to the lack of an authentic certificate.

However, the ambiguity did not stop Yu-Gi-Oh! fans from bidding. The card’s price jumped to 486 thousand CNY(~ 77 thousand USD) within minutes of the auction and eventually landed on a shocking 87 million CNY (~13 million USD). However, the estimated market price for this rare limited card is around 200-300 thousand CNY (~31-46 thousand USD). The courthouse soon closed the auction because the bids were considered ‘speculative and malicious’, and the card was pulled from the platform. Ironically, the card’s previous owner, who received a life sentence, ‘only’ embezzled 70 million CNY(~10.8 million USD) from the government fund.

Update: As of Feb 28th, the auction and its related items are withdrawn from the platform because 'the applicant for the enforcement and other creditors of the enforcement decided to withdraw the enforcement.
