NetEase Games recently announced that it has established a new studio, Bad Brain Game Studios, in Canada. The company has offices in Toronto, Ontario, and Montreal, Quebec, and supports a hybrid working model for its team.

According to the official announcement, Bad Brain Game Studios is developing a story-driven open-world action-adventure game inspired by cult films from the 1980s. The game will be developed using Unreal Engine 5 and is expected to be a new IP for the company.

The team will be led by Sean Crooks, former Chief Producer at Ubisoft Toronto, who has worked on games such as Driver: San Francisco and the Watch Dogs series. Other team members have worked on games such as Far Cry 2, Just Dance, Army of Two, and the Splinter Cell series.

Bad Brain Game Studios is NetEase's second developer in Canada, following the acquisition of SkyBox Labs in January. It is also one of several new internal studios established by NetEase in the West, including Anchor Point Studios, Spliced, Jar of Sparks, and Jackalope Games (formerly known as Jackalyptic Games).
