The gaming industry in China takes a socially responsible turn with the launch of the "Good Games, Good Actions" (“好游善行”) initiative. The campaign aims to explore the positive societal impacts of video games beyond mere entertainment, focusing on educational, social, and philanthropic applications.
"Good Games, Good Actions"
Guided by the China Audio-Video and Digital Publishing Association’s gaming committee and co-sponsored by notable entities like CiGA, Game for Good (G4G), and Sony Interactive Entertainment Shanghai, the initiative aims to encourage developers to blend interactive designs with social purposes. It will comprise several segments, including a game collection event targeting creations that promote public understanding and engagement in various themes. Submissions are accepted until September 25th through their official website.
The initiative isn't just lip service. "Good Games, Good Actions" promises tangible actions like a charity Game Jam called "Love Fills the Sky" (爱满星空 - 公益 Game Jam), scheduled for September 21-28. This jam aims to tackle serious societal issues, having previously engaged players in understanding autism, Alzheimer's, and environmental concerns.

The organizers plan to showcase the selected games at the WePlay Cultural Expo from November 18-19, 2023, and also aim to highlight philanthropic efforts within the gaming industry. Notably, the initiative has received widespread support from professionals across fields like psychology, environmental science, and the arts, who are also keen gamers themselves.
This effort represents a conscientious step for the industry. Besides offering entertainment, games now stand as a unique medium capable of driving positive social change. The involvement of Sony Interactive Entertainment Shanghai and other key players shows that the industry is increasingly acknowledging its role in wider societal development.
