Recently, gamers found a blatantly fake PlayStation 5 appearing on Alibaba. It calls itself “GameStation 5” or “GS5” in short. The GS5 has a striking resemblance to the PlayStation 5, while only being a quarter of the size.

This “Mini PS5” has a classic 8-bit chip, and according to the vendor’s claim, it comes with more than 700 preinstalled NES games, albeit not mentioning if any of those has legitimate licensing.

The “GS5” actually has a lineage,  a predecessor called “GS4 Pro” that shares the same recipe: an 8-bit console disguised as a proper current-gen game machine. However, the GS4 Pro takes classic NES cartridges and had a sliding cover design to hide its cartridge slot.

On Chinese E-Commerce platform Alibaba, a variety of bootleg 8bit consoles can be found in the forms of the original NES, SNES, PSP, PSV, Sega Genesis, Gameboy, or Nintendo Switch, all boasting a gigantic game library. Their price normally ranges from $10-$100, and the buyer reviews seem to be mostly positive. 35 years after the initial launch of NES in Japan (under the Famicom brand), these classic games are still going strong and entertaining a new generation of gamers.
