According to Newzoo, the global games market in 2022 is estimated to see an overall revenue of 196.8 billion USD, increasing by 2.1% compared to last year, with the number of players expected to reach 3.2 billion. Additionally, Newzoo predicts that these figures will grow to 225.1 billion USD in revenue and 3.5 billion in players in 2025.
The overall revenue is forecasted to increase by 4.7% from 2020 to 2025
In terms of games in different domains, mobile games are predicted to have the most potential, making up 53% of the total revenue with a 5.1% year-on-year growth. However, the revenue of browser PC games and console games is expected to decrease by 16.9% and 2.2%, respectively.
For now, players in Asia-Pacific are still the main force of gaming, making up 55% of the total players, followed by 15% of players in the Middle East and Africa and 13% of players in Europe.
Mobile games are expected to encounter a significant increase in revenue in 2022
Newzoo concludes that the games market in 2022 will face stabilization. Unlike the booming in 2020 and 2021, the games market in the near future is expected to encounter obstacles as many countries have lifted their lock-down restrictions, meaning people are no longer stuck at home; while the release of many AAA games has been delayed until the end of 2022; the wide-ranged inflation makes it hard for price-sensitive players to continue to spending on gaming devices and products at the same rates.
However, the overall revenue growth seems to prove that the market is “recession-proof”. Newzoo predicts that the market will continue to flourish next year and that 2023 and 2024 will be the best years ever in terms of player choice and quality content.
