Three people producing and distributing illegal cheats for Genshin Impact were sentenced to between 1.5 and 4 years behind bars. This is the first case of its kind where people producing cheats for Genshin Impact have been sentenced to serve jail time.

The case involves an illegal income of 2 million CNY (~297,000 USD) from over 40,000 cheat cards for a cheat program called “KQ”.

In detail, from October 2020 to May 2021, Zhou negotiated with an acquaintance named Sun to get data about Genshin Impact from another person, Yao, to mass-produce the cheats.

The cheats seriously impacted the game’s fairness, allowing props/items to be illegally obtained and undermining the experience of the game, causing significant economic losses for the developer. After Xuhui police received a report from HoYoverse, they investigated the case, and the three criminals were arrested in June 2021.

In addition to the jail sentences, the three criminals face fines of between 10,000 CNY and 50,000 CNY each.
