On August 31, Mark Merrill, president and co-founder of Riot Games, announced that Riot Game's R&D department in Shanghai would be upgraded to Riot China Studio Group.

Riot Games set up the new R&D department in Shanghai on July 30, 2021, and plans to expand the team to over 100 people. The department will be responsible for several new projects around the world, dedicated to creating the next League of Legends or Valorant.

One year after its establishment, according to Mark Merrill,  the Shanghai department has rapidly expanded to a team of 60 people and has a number of products in development. Mark Merrill stated: “Riot Games will continue to strengthen construction and investment in game R&D teams in the Chinese market, and plans to increase investment in Shanghai, Shenzhen and other Chinese cities... establish local studios, support initial development and collaborative R&D projects, and attract more excellent game developers. The goal of the newly upgraded Riot Games China R&D studio team is to create games that can last for decades and deliver a better gaming experience to players in China and around the world.”
