Rurouni Kenshin is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Nobuhiro Watsuki. The story begins during the 11th year of the Meiji period in Japan (1878) and follows a former assassin from the Bakumatsu, known as Hitokiri Battosai. It was adapted into a 95-episode animated television series and an animated film.
Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkyō Romance tells the story of a former assassin named Kenshin Himura who has taken a vow to never kill again. He meets a young woman named Kaoru Kamiya, who runs a dojo in Tokyo and teaches sword fighting. Kenshin becomes a lodger at the dojo and helps Kaoru protect it from various threats. Throughout the series, Kenshin encounters various enemies from his past who seek revenge for his actions as an assassin. He also becomes involved in various conflicts related to the political and social changes happening in Japan during the Meiji period. The story explores themes of redemption, forgiveness, and the consequences of violence, and features a diverse cast of characters with complex motivations and backstories.
