The Game Developers Conference (GDC) is an annual conference for video game developers. This year's GDC was held on March 22nd-25th as scheduled. Just have a look at what sessions are worth noting at GDC today.

1.Breaking the Cycle: The Making of 'Returnal'

Housemarque is the oldest game development studio in Finland, known mostly for their fast-paced arcade-inspired shooters. With Returnal, they had a unique opportunity to take their craft to the next level and create a world-class launch title for the PS5.

This retrospective-style talk will cover Housemarque's full "indie to AAA" journey of developing Returnal, from the initial concept and aspirations to its eventual critically-acclaimed release.

The talk will delve deeper into some key creative decisions and challenges the team overcame as they shot for the stars with Returnal

2.Changes in the use of NFTs in games

In this session, attendees will first look at the characteristics of NFTs and how early NFTs were applied to games. The session will then transition to the current trends of how NFTs are being utilized in gaming and speculate on its prospects for the future.

3.Redefining Online Multiplayer Experiences on PlayStation 5

In this session, Sony Interactive Entertainment shares how it reinvented its legacy architecture and uses AWS to ensure high scalability, availability, and flexibility to meet changing demands for the next generation of play.

4.Creating the Many Faces of 'Horizon Forbidden West'

People have an intrinsic ability to identify the attributes of the human face and remember details. This is no different with the faces of a game character: we remember their names, attributes, and expressions. Building quality characters, with their faces as the most important graphical benchmarks, is, therefore, one of the core pillars of game development.

Guerrilla wants to share how they achieved the final quality of the characters' faces in Horizon Forbidden West and show off the incredibly high fidelity thanks to the power of the PlayStation 5. Most importantly, Guerrilla will discuss how to do all this to scale so that all faces in the Forbidden West’s open-world have a similarly high quality.

5.'Diablo 2: Resurrected': The Art Direction and Pipelines for Resurrecting Evil

Diablo II: Resurrected is an action role-playing video game co-developed by Blizzard Entertainment and Vicarious Visions and published by Blizzard Entertainment. It is a remastered version of Diablo II (2000) and its expansion Lord of Destruction (2001).

This session will cover how the art direction for Diablo 2: Resurrected achieved modern visual fidelity in a 3D version of a remastered 2D game and some of the pipelines that allowed us to achieve this vision.

Dustin will cover the initial decisions made before and during pre-production, the key pillars for Diablo 2: Resurrected that guided it's production, and how the different art disciplines tackled challenges along the way to ensure they stayed on time and at a very high fidelity bar.

6.How Tencent Protects Worldwide FPS Games with Advanced Anti-Cheat Solutions

This presentation focuses on the game protection and leading anti-plugin technologies of mobile and PC games. Cheating and malicious behaviors have experienced exponential increase in the past decade, which greatly harms game companies’ interests.

Originated from Tencent Games, their team has become the largest game protection team with more than 300 experts and provided anti-cheat services for many top games. In addition, the presenter will discuss the new cheating trends in FPS games and our relative solutions.
