Being Kind Is the Key to Winning in KarmaZoo

KarmaZoo is a multiplayer platform game from the developer Pastagames that combines chaos with fun. The game supports up to 10 players playing together and encourages players to establish connections, promote cooperation, and simply be good people.

As a 2D pixel-style platformer, KarmaZoo has a very quick learning curve. The first character only needs the jump and sing keys (used to interact with devices) to complete all puzzles. In addition, the death penalty in the game is extremely low, so players do not need much experience in platformers.

"Loop" is the main mode of KarmaZoo. 2-10 players need to collaborate and solve a series of increasingly difficult and dynamically adjusted levels.

A simple example is that one or more players need to stand still and continuously interact with the device to open a door. After their teammates pass through, they need to control the device on the other side to complete the handover and help the people who opened the door catch up with the team.

According to Nadim Haddad, the game’s designer, his inspiration came from the large iron gates at the entrance of the Metro station in Paris. It takes a lot of effort to push them open once they are closed. Therefore, people generally choose to hold the gate open and wait for the next passengers to catch up and take over. “We want to make an anti-gatekeeping game,” says Haddad. Everyone is doing a simple and practical "good deed," and everyone benefits from this behavior.

The game will provide Karma rewards for various "good deeds" by the players. Teammates can also launch hearts at each other, giving them more Karma. Therefore, as long as players "do good" in the game, they will always have good results. And if the team is cohesive enough to successfully pass the level, each player will also receive Karma equal to the team's total Karma collected. The more teammates, the more rewards, and the more happiness.

The Karma points in the game can be used to unlock up to 50 cute pixelated characters, each with a special ability that matches its appearance: frogs that can perform triple jumps in the air, elephants that can smash specific walls, whales that can create platforms for teammates using water sprays, and so on. Different characters will also have exclusive emotes. As the game's levels adjust to the size of the player team and the selected characters, players can freely choose their favorite characters without having to worry about meeting any specific team compositions.

The main gameplay of KarmaZoo is cooperation rather than competition, but if players want to compete with others, the chaotic and wild "Totem Mode" is prepared for them. "Totem Mode" allows up to 8 players to compete in various mini-games. Unlike "Loop Mode," which supports online matching, "Totem Mode" is limited to friends only and does not offer any Karma rewards. Its just for fun.

Approachable gameplay, cross-platform support between PC and consoles, a quirky emote-based communication system, and support for 22 languages means anyone, anywhere, can play KarmaZoo and help their team earn Karma.
