September 13, 2023, marks the 20th anniversary of Valve's digital distribution platform, Steam, launched on September 12th, 2003. Initially, the platform was met with significant backlash from the gaming community, as it appeared Valve was replacing physical game discs and server browsers with a glorified form of DRM. The mandatory Steam installation for 2004's Half-Life 2 particularly rankled gamers.

Publishers also raised eyebrows, questioning why they should partner with Valve when they could develop their own platforms, such as EA's Origin or Ubisoft's UPlay. However, the resounding success of Half-Life 2 and subsequent partnerships with various publishers catapulted Steam to its status as the go-to PC gaming platform.

Fast forward to today, and even long-time holdouts like EA, Ubisoft, Microsoft, and Sony have made their presence felt on Steam. Newer platforms like Epic Games Store, despite generous giveaways, have yet to match Steam's momentum. Square Enix has fully returned, and even Blizzard started offering games on Steam earlier this year.

Valve's "ultimate goal" for Steam has evolved into a platform aimed at enabling game developers to directly reach their audience and grow it. Over time, Steam has become not just a utility but a significant facilitator for indie game discovery.

During the pandemic, Steam saw its player numbers skyrocket, reaching a peak of 10 million simultaneous logins this past January. The recent introduction of the Steam Deck handheld gaming device has revitalized the platform's user interface, making it more appealing than ever.

As of now, Steam's image as a mere DRM tool has largely been replaced by its reputation as a one-stop-shop for PC gaming, complete with frequent sales and new features rolled out regularly.

As Steam celebrates its 20-year journey, it’s clear that the platform has moved beyond its controversial origins to become an essential part of the PC gaming landscape.
