Valentine’s day is always a big deal in dating simulator games. Normally, players will be expecting their dates in-game sending romance messages to them on that day. But Light and Night players got something unexpected this year: their husbando was sending them messages with very aggressive product placements.

In Light and Night in-game conversations, players found their husbandos kept mentioning a navigation software brand name unnecessarily frequently. And when they opened the in-game fake social media wall, the whole screen was filled with their husbandos’ recent moments related to the navigation software.

It took the player no time to realize it was probably a product placement collaboration and post their disappointment on social media. Some players complained that their Valentine’s Day was ruined. Some said their husbando was out-off-character and acting like an annoying social media salesperson.

Baidu Map, the navigation software, was having a collaboration with Light and Night on Feb 14 by adding the fictional characters as new navigation assistant options. The in-game product placement could be part of the collaboration marketing plan.
