Insomniac Games' Sunset Overdrive Nets Merely 567 Dollars in Profit
Insomniac Games, known for the blockbuster success of its 'Marvel’s Spider-Man series,' has faced a starkly different financial outcome with its 2014 title 'Sunset Overdrive.' A recent ransomware attack leak revealed that the studio earned a mere 567 USD in profits from the game, far below industry expectations.
Originally released for Xbox One and later ported to PC in 2018, Sunset Overdrive sold approximately 1.9 million units. Despite this, the financial gain for Insomniac Games has been surprisingly low. The game, which had a production budget of 42.6 million USD, generated 49.7 million USD in net sales. However, Insomniac's share of the profits amounted to just over five hundred dollars, not even crossing the thousand-dollar mark.
This revelation came to light following a large-scale ransomware attack, during which an internal document from Insomniac Games was leaked, detailing sales figures for several of its games. The document indicates that each unit of "Sunset Overdrive" sold brought in an average of 26 USD, highlighting the slim profit margins for the studio.
Since Sony's acquisition of Insomniac Games in 2019, the rights to Sunset Overdrive presumably transferred to Sony. While there has been speculation about reviving the franchise, nothing concrete has materialized yet.
In contrast to Sunset Overdrive, other Insomniac titles like 'Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales' have achieved tremendous success, with over 10.2 million units sold. However, another recent title, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, reportedly incurred an 8 million USD loss, despite selling 2.2 million units.
